Experience with 4 Font Recognition Tools

A good font recognition tool is essential when you admire the fonts on images but don't know their names or how to find them. Font recognition tools will enhance your efficiency. I used four commonly mentioned font recognition tools, and below, I will explain my experience with each one using screenshots and descriptions. I hope this article helps you choose the best one.

1. Fontapp

This is a font management software, and its font recognition tool is called AI Font Recognition, found in Smart Tools.

You can select, drag and drop, or copy-paste images. If the image contains many words and fonts, the software provides text labels corresponding to the words in the image. Clicking on different labels shows different recognition results.

Fontapp divides recognition results into two categories: Results and Related. Since Fontapp has built-in font management functions, you can directly bookmark or activate any Fontapp fonts found in the results.

Fontapp requires a subscription, and this font recognition function is also paid. Additionally, it doesn't seem to have a custom text recognition area adjustment feature.

However, I still find Fontapp's font recognition very useful. Its biggest advantage is recognizing multiple fonts simultaneously, which I've never experienced before. Furthermore, designers can use the fonts directly from the results without additional download steps, making it very convenient. 2. What the Font

This is MyFonts' font recognition tool, available for use on their website. You can upload, drag and drop, or provide an image URL.

It automatically outlines some text with a black dashed box, or you can click "select custom" to choose the recognition area yourself. You can also rotate the image to recognize fonts not in a horizontal layout. After selecting an area, the software lists the recognition results in order of similarity.

However, it can only recognize one font at a time. If there are multiple fonts in the image, you need to go back and select other areas.

The experience with What the Font is also excellent. Its advantage is that it's free, with a clean and clear interface. The recognition results are quite accurate.

3. Font Squirrel Matcherator

Font Squirrel's font recognition tool is also web-based. Similar to What the Font, you can upload, drag and drop, or provide a link.

However, it doesn't automatically recognize text in images with a lot of text. You need to manually drag the image and selection box to determine the recognition area. Sometimes you need to manually merge fonts.

Font Squirrel Matcherator also only recognizes one font at a time. Although it's free, I don't recommend it because selecting the recognition area manually is inconvenient, and the website has many pop-up ads.

4. What Font is

The Font Finder feature on the What Font is website is also web-based.

After uploading an image, it provides contrast, brightness, and rotation adjustments to make the text clearer. However, you need to manually merge the strokes of the letters and label them. This is useful for those exaggerated font designs.

It's free, but I find the user experience poor. The site has many pop-up ads that block the function buttons, and there are bugs when uploading images, making it frustrating.

Conclusion

Overall, after experiencing these four font recognition tools, I recommend using Fontapp and What the Font. They each have different advantages. What the Font is free, while Fontapp can recognize multiple fonts simultaneously and integrates seamlessly with its font management and usage functions. For designers, it can be a great efficiency booster.
