Art Deco Influence

The entire visual identity for the Paris 2024 Olympics pays homage to the Art Deco style, which was prevalent during the 1924 Olympics in Paris. French Art Deco is an artistic style from the early 20th century that combined luxurious decoration with modernist design principles. It uses simple geometric shapes, such as straight lines, rectangles, circles, and triangles, to create a clear sense of structure and symmetry.

The design also features ornate details like reliefs, engravings, and intricate patterns. Art Deco simplified decoration while conveying beauty through abstract patterns and forms. This highly decorative and modern style left a lasting impact not only on architecture and interior design but also on painting, sculpture, furniture, and advertising.

"Paris 2024" and Art Deco

As one of the birthplaces of the Art Deco style, Paris’s design traditions are reinterpreted in the modern "Paris 2024" typeface, showcasing the city's cultural and artistic heritage. Designer Julie Matikhine stated, “We have created a time bridge between the 1924 Paris Olympics and today.” She and her team were deeply inspired by the simple shapes and "strong convictions" emphasized by this artistic movement.

The "Paris 2024" typeface is a variable font with seven weights, ranging from hairline to extra bold, making it adaptable to all digital platforms and content display needs. The design incorporates the geometric shapes of Art Deco, such as straight lines and curves, which are central elements of the Art Deco style. The rounded lines gracefully render both letters and numbers, reflecting the humanistic spirit of France.

The streamlined design aligns with Art Deco’s modernity, evoking a sense of movement and energy. While modern, the font retains the intricate elegance of Art Deco, with details in some letters, like the design of the letter "A," taking inspiration from architectural elements like arches. The crossbar of the letter "A" is set low, giving it a unique appearance reminiscent of Art Deco designs.

Environmental Concept

Though the "Paris 2024" typeface mainly focuses on cultural and aesthetic design, the organizers of the Paris Olympics also emphasize environmental sustainability. With this in mind, the font design incorporates eco-friendly considerations, such as using sustainable materials for printing and design, promoting a green philosophy. The "Paris 2024" font is eco-designed to limit the amount of paper required for printing and to reduce energy consumption in digital media. Its compact design helps minimize paper and ink usage. The variable font size also helps reduce energy consumption by using a single font file.
