How to Find Free Alternatives Using Font Recognition Tools

As designers, we deal with fonts every day. Often, we find the perfect font only to discover it’s too expensive for our budget. This is where searching for similar free fonts becomes essential, addressing both design and budget constraints. Font recognition software thus becomes a crucial tool, and Fontapp is one such font management software with recognition features. Here’s how to use it to find free fonts with a similar style.Free Download

First, prepare a clear image of the font you want to use. Open Fontapp, navigate to the Smart Tools section, and click on AI Font Finder. You can choose, drag, or copy and paste the image.

If the image contains multiple texts or fonts, the software will automatically identify and label them. By clicking on the different color tags, you can see the recognition results for each text. Fontapp categorizes the results into “Results” and “Related,” allowing you to find the name of your desired font (or the closest style) and explore other similar fonts.

Fontapp also has built-in font management, so you can directly activate or bookmark any fonts found in the results, making them available in various design software (like Adobe AI, PS, Figma, etc.).

For example, if I want to use a font from a poster and discover it's FF DIN at a high price, I can look for a similar style.

I open Fontapp, find AI Font Finder, and upload the prepared image. Logging in or registering is required for full functionality.

After a few seconds, the recognition results appear. The software identifies the text in the image, showing different sections and their corresponding fonts.

The recognized fonts will display on the right, such as Bebas Neue Regular, Staatliches Regular, Sofia Sans Extra Condensed Bold, etc. If you find a font you like, toggle the switch to activate it, or click the star to bookmark it. Once activated, you’ll receive a prompt confirming success, and you can use the font in various design applications.

For instance, I open Keynote, type my text, pull down the font menu, and find the newly activated font ready for use.
